This August, my family and I went to Idaho Falls to enjoy a weekend of hot springs and being away from home.   Idaho Falls is one of my favorite farm towns.   It is located west of the Tetons and has rolling hills with potatoes, hay, and barley being grown all around.   The Museum of Idaho is located here as well.   The weekend we visited, the Titanic exhibit was on display.

Our first stop was Reed’s Dairy.   Having been spoiled by good ice cream, we took the suggestion from Saveur magazine and stopped by.   The dairy is located on the outskirts of town.   We knew this from the article, but didn’t know what street we were on in relation to where we were coming from.   With some good luck, we literally ran into it!   The   dairy makes their own ice cream and serves it fresh onsite.   The flavor was excellent and texture as rich and creamy as the best ice cream that I have had.   Our next stop was Heise Hot Springs, which is also a real treat.   But that is not what I am writing about.

After a long day of back to school shopping, my wife and I pulled our kids into Brownstone Brewery.   Brownstone is located next to the Snake River in downtown Idaho Falls.    Our table was next to the window and we could watch the river’s falls and passerby’ s enjoying an afternoon walk.   Brownstone is a brick building with timberframe highlights.   The interior is very modern and boasts history and good taste.

Our waitress arrived quickly.   Our kids ordered root beer, though they were disappointed that Brownstone does not make their own root beer.   K and I read the beer menu.   What we found was seven beers of all the favorite flavors, including IPA, Pilsner, and more.   K ordered a hefeweizen and I ordered a Summerfest.   We were both looking for refreshing beers that would not be too much of a meal.

We were not disappointed!

The hefeweizen was full and carried a full flavor and a good wheat overtone.   My Summerfest was dark and had a full nutty flavor without pushing the brown ale heaviness that occurs with some brown ales.   The Summerfest was an excellent hot afternoon beverage and went fast.   When I return, I will definitely get another.    Unfortunately for me, Brownstone did not have an IPA ready.   I look forward to having one of these as well.

When in Idaho Falls, and walking along the river, don’t miss Brownstone Brewery.
